The history behing the sculture is the most ificant take away. A story that needs telling. Great memorial to the rescue of Jerry. This is a stunning and heartfelt sculpture that tells an important story of one of the first freed men after slavery and his recapture on behalf of a federal government out of touch with the state of New York.

The monument is not well advertised except during black history month it's pretty easy to miss. Just look for the war monument and take a walk around the square. It's on the far end in front of the old post office. I highly recommend a visit.

If you are a history buff, especially of the abolitionist movement, you should at least swing by. Local history.
A nice monument to remember how abolitionists recused a fugitive slave named William "Jerry" Henry. A pivotal moment in our nation's history. Written September 9, Interesting Local History. I grew up in this city and had no idea that Syracuse played a big part in the Jerry Rescue of southern slaves until I accidentally came across this monument. It is located in Clinton Square so if you are in that area check it out.

This monument commemorates the event when, in spite of the Fugitive Slave Act, local abolitionists broke a captured slave out of jail rather than allow him to be surrendered to bounty hunters. It's very vivid, life size, and provides nice contrast to usual, static and disconnected monuments.
